On February 2, 2014 Simon, a six week old Pit Bull, was surrendered to a shelter by his owners due to their inability to care for his apparent inability to balance himself and walk. Despite his challenges one thing was clear- Simon was full of life and nothing got him down! Seeing the strength in this little puppy's spirit set the wheels in motion for his rescue and on March 15th Simon was taken in by Helpers4Shelters and arrived at his foster home. Simon could not use his rear legs properly. He was able to almost get himself up and staying, but immediately fell back down and at times even dragged his hind end. Through it all, rather than showing he was challenged Simon showed determination and will. All he wanted to do is play with the other dogs in his foster home and get into everything possible that he found fun...and he was successful! Simon was assessed by a general veterinarian, physical rehabilitation therapist and neurologist. After examination, an MRI, consultation with other neurologists and several weeks observation it's been determined that Simon has degenerative myelopathy. Simon has a small pocket of fluid in his spinal cord and the cause is unknown. A scan of his brain shows no abnormality and the structure of his spine shows no sign of injury. Since March Simon has proved to gain strength in his hind end, greatly improved his balance and no longer drags his hind end. His hind end "flops" or "wobbles" over from time to time but Simon wastes no time in correcting himself and moves on without any hesitation. Simon continues to thrive and keep his foster dog friends on their paws. He loves everyone and everything, is a typical puppy and even in his mischievous puppy moments has mastered "the look" that has a magical way of getting him out of trouble. Let's talk about his ears- it is quite possible Simon is a Pit Bull- Rabbit mix given their size and the fact they stand straight up until the tips fold over. Simon doesn't ask for much- a nylabone, a toy, a bone, some play time, a loving hand to pet him and a lap to lay on when he needs to recharge his batteries. While Simon lives in a foster home with four other dogs he would do well in a home with or without other dogs as he adjusts his interaction and energy level with his surroundings. In lieu of other canine companions Simon would need human interaction, as any dog would. As for his special needs- Simon requires nothing but observation going forward and a committed family that understands his condition might worsen, "wax and wane", get better or stay the same.
